It's July 20th, which is the day the narrator first spoke to the telephone guy. He's thinking about how strange it is that the guy used the phone to call him when he was trying to dig up some bones. He realizes that it never would have happened if he hadn't planned on going to the golf course once a year. The guy who called the phone was akira, who said that they should excavate the bones because the plans for the course had changed. The phone guy was the one who knew about the plan, and he killed the guy because he didn't want anyone to know about it. The narrator doesn't know what to make of this. He wants to know what akira would have gotten out of all of this, but he can't figure it out.
