In this chapter, Jim delivers a long speech in which he explains that he is the "righteous side" of the "way of heaven" and that the "one who is colluding" with Mingling is "the evil side." He then offers a second solution to the problem of killing Mingling: he offers to sacrifice 100 human souls to the shadow sword. He then explains that among the people present, there is only one person who is suitable to sacrifice his soul to the "shadow sword." This person is Jiming, who has done so much wrong that he deserves to die. Jiming asks if he can sacrifice his life to save the lives of so many people, but Jiming says that he can only do so if he kills Mingling.
