This chapter opens with a description of the Host's wife, who is frightened and weak. The Host has been living with his father in the mountains for many years. When the Host was thirteen years old, the Host found a mushroom and tied a rope around his waist so that he could pick it up. When his father saw the mushroom, he fainted, and the Host returned to life. He swore that he would get back to his father as soon as he could to protect him and his father. However, when the Host saw the big fox, he hurtled toward the fox and the fox dashed out of sight before the Host could respond. After burying his father, he killed many of the foxes in the area and skinned one section of the fox's body to make a whistle for the other foxes to escape. This chapter ends with the Host and his wife sitting on a tree.
