The chapter opens with a description of the situation in which the family is living. The family has placed a jar of blood on the ground and hung a pig on a tree. During the bloodletting, the family uses a butcher's knife to cut off the blood from the pig. When the butcher sharpens his knife, he suddenly has a strange feeling that someone is looking at him. A scream comes out of the house, and his wife tells him that there is a ghost staring at them. The ghost is red-eyed, and the family fears that it is an evil spirit. When they look at the trunk, they see a dirty hand behind the tree. A few seconds later, a man in a fur vest comes out from the trunk to check on how the knife is with his hand. The man tells the family that he used to be human, a god, a ghost, and a human again. He tells them that he is going to teach them a lesson. When zheng asks the man who he is, the man tells him he is yanlaojiu. zheng finally gets the man to give him a hand, and zheng hits the man. laojiu tries to throw the stick at them, but the stick hits the tree instead of killing them
