The chapter opens with a description of the apartment where the narrator is staying. The apartment is described as a "ghost building" with no windows and a dirty mattress. The narrator goes to the bedroom to check out the room. He finds two mirrors next to his bed, which makes him uncomfortable. He decides to leave the apartment immediately, but he stumbles out of the door and falls down in the hallway. He finally manages to get out. He admires himself for having the courage to question himself at this time. He goes to sleep, and wakes up the next morning to find that the apartment is not haunted.
