The chapter opens with a description of a strange dream that the governor of Guizhou has had. The old man in the dream screams at the governor. The governor sends the old man out to find out what has happened. The man tells the governor that his son has died, and that Guizhou should not be held responsible for his death. However, in the morning, a guard discovers that the man has hanged himself in the prison cell. He is angry that the prison guard has ruined his moment. When he thinks he is dead, he screams and sits bolt upright. He touches his neck and feels strange pain right away. He runs to the mirror and sees a blood mark written on a wall behind him. He turns around and sees that the mark is a gruesome one. This is the beginning of the chapter.
