This chapter opens with a description of the temple of the "mountain god" , which is located in a small village in central China. There are only one rooms in the temple, and one of them is very small. The temple's leader, liuchangxi, and his son-in-law, yanlaojiu, are walking down the street when they are spotted by two men who are eating the sacrificial offerings. The two men are clearly stealing the offerings from the mountain god. The liu family immediately flees the scene, and the whole village is terrified that they will be the next victim. The father-son duo tries to hide their identity from the villagers, but they are caught in the middle of the commotion and are forced to flee.
