About This Chapter
As usual, the narrator walks on the road to the West Mountain graveyard where the old man is buried. On the way, he sees a man behind him, and he realizes that it's not a ghost, but a "straw man" . The narrator remembers what yanlaojiu told him before: human-shaped creatures, like puppets, and paper men, were easily possessed by ghosts, and became monsters. He also remembers that the men are hunters for generations, and that the charm of the mountains and sea was always powerful and effective. One day, he accidentally finds a dead body lying in the middle of the road. He puts a straw man in the place of the dead man's body, and the man breaks out cold sweat, which is equivalent to manslaughter. He plans to use the money from the dead body to set up a ghost formation near the road in the future, which will earn him a lot of money. After the narrator finishes his story, he runs over to look at the painting that zhao ba has done. The painting looks good, but the demon is not as good as the one the narrator painted. The rabbits are gone, and a demon has taken their place. He closes the window, afraid that the demon will chase him. He hears the roar of some animals, but he doesn't react quickly enough. The demon takes the rabbits' place, and then the rabbits disappear again. After he faints, he finds a small grave in the distance. It's the same grave that he buried earlier that night. The old man also disappears, and everything goes back to normal. After all, he didn't follow his ancestors' rules, so there's no way for him to continue doing evil. He sets free the rabbits by following his master's instructions.
