In this chapter, the narrator tells the story of how he and his uncle went hunting together in the north of China in the late 1990s. On their way to the spot where the pheasants were killed, they bump into each other. The narrator's uncle stops in front of him, and the two men start to talk, but suddenly, the man behind them bumps into the back of the hunter. The man behind him doesn't recognize what's going on, so he asks the hunter to hush. The two men are shocked to see the fox they're about to kill. The hunter grabs the barrel and stops the man, but the fox doesn' t die. Instead, the fox opens his mouth and starts to growl, which the hunter can't stop. The story ends with the narrator saying that even if there is a demon in nature, they will coexist peacefully with it.
