The story opens with a description of a man named xiang who goes into the mountains to collect herbs for his wife. Unfortunately, he accidentally steps on a trap put by a hunter. The man is injured, but he does not fear because he is surrounded by wolves. The giant dog stands between him and the wolves, but the giant dog takes a few steps away from the old man. The old man realizes that the dog is a mastiff, and he breaks the trap to free the injured man.
