In this chapter, the narrator recounts the story of how he was tricked into following a friend to work as a courier. The friend was dressed as a strange man, and the narrator saw a young woman who had to sign countless packages for strangers every day. According to the neighbors, the young woman was often visited by relatives and friends to collect her debts. The narrator says that although the work was hard, it gave him a chance to observe the world from the other side. The strange man told him that he had a beautiful girlfriend, and they were in love. They even set a date and had sworn to each other, but the vow was not fulfilled. The man wrapped himself in secrecy to avoid the sight of his girlfriend, who would eventually find him. After that incident, he never saw the strange man again
