The chapter opens with a description of a raid that has just taken place. The narrator tells us that the bandits have just arrived at the mountain range and are planning to ambush the caravan. The caravan is already in the middle of the mountain, so they won't be able to attack until they get to the heart of the mountains. They'll just roll boulders and trees down the mountain and block the caravan's path until they reach the mountain's heart. The captain tells the others to look out for an ambush on both sides. They do, and they kill four of the bandits. They go on ahead, and the captain tells them that they'll have to rely on him and his detecting magic to find out what's going on. He tells them to hold on, because there's a bunch of bandits in the front and they're planning to attack the caravan as well. They don't have any magic that would cause the bandits to show up, but they do have a light magic that they can use to get in their way. They can't get out of their way, and their boulders and trunks have all been shattered. They have no choice but to fight on their own.
