This chapter opens with a description of the large rock tribe, the "broad rock clan." They refuse to allow the men to bring their weapons to the temple to meet with the patriarch, and they threaten to kill them if the men do not turn their faces away from them. The two young men try to convince themselves that their father is not present, but he refuses to talk to them. He asks them not to tell anyone that he is the murderer, and that they must not tell anyone about it either. They decide to go to meet the patriarch anyway, but they are told that they are not allowed to carry their weapons. They are told to hand them over to the patriarch when they come out of the temple. The patriarch will have a fair decision, and he will not wrong them. They agree to hand over their weapons and return them to them after they leave the temple
