This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between the Inquisitor and Yondu. Yondu tells Yondu that he used to be a lowly elf who traveled to the Death Range to cultivate his magic. When he arrived, he realized how weak he was. He kept trying to escape, but there was too much of the undead in the area. Eventually, he stumbled into a dark pit and hid there for a year. He ate some of the flesh of the monsters to survive. In the following years, he grew stronger and stronger, but he only walked a few steps to the edge of the range. He now knows that the only way to survive there is to find a cave and hide there. He offers to give Yondu the crystal in exchange for the protection of the elves, but Yondu points out that the mainland is the only place in the world where Yondu can find the crystal.
