In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the protagonist, a young man named Dai. He is a smart, dumb, and fun-loving young man who enjoys eating steamed buns. When his uncle shows him a bag of fish that he caught earlier in the day, he is so excited that he gives the fish back to the poor woman who took it from him. When he learns that the woman has suffered greatly because of the thief's generosity, he becomes furious.
