This chapter opens with a conversation between a mountain man and a pair of siblings. The siblings are discussing the possibility of the two of them having turned red. The brothers are worried that the mountain man has taken something important from them, and if they do not find him, they will be forced to take him into the police station. They also worry that he has taken their money, and that they will not be able to get it back. They decide to find him as soon as they can, and the brothers discuss how they will survive for 49 days if they cannot find the body of the calamity infant. They wonder why they did not tell him earlier, and they wonder why he has not been able to help them deal with the baby. They feel that they are so high up in the mountain that they cannot keep their balance. They realize that they have found the calamity body and that the baby has been transformed into the body
