About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the family has been living on a street in Salt Lake City known as the "food street" because of all the "urban legends" about it. One of the siblings, a wolf-dog named Hanjian, tells his sister that he can't hide his identity in human society because he's a "demonic spirit" . He tells her that the days of "hide and seek" are over, and that he was surprised to find that the rules of human society no longer apply to him. He says that he used to be able to hide or enter into a "contractual relationship" with humans, but this morning, he found that those rules were no longer in effect. Now, he says, he can live "proudly under the sun" because he no longer has to hide his true identity. He also says that there were "a few calamity spirits" in the area, but that they all disappeared this morning.
