This chapter opens with a description of the family's visit to a Salt Lake City grocery store. The siblings are in the middle of shopping for salt when they hear a commotion outside. They rush inside to find that the commotion is caused by a "calamity spirit aura" , which is the incarnation of the spirit that they saw earlier in the day. Worried, the siblings ask fei lan why he is there. He tells them that he has come to deal with the "scattered calamity spirits essence" . They thank him for his help, but fei says that he did not come to save them, but to be his rival. He praises his sister for her strength and says that she is his rival after all
