This chapter opens with a description of a place called New Patria, which has become a refuge for those of the upper classes. The narrator tells us that the place was built by a group of people who wanted to deflect criticism of the lower classes. It's a nice place, and it's also where Caius' mother died. Caius asks if he can follow him to the place, but the narrator tells him that he's been given permission to do so. He tells Caius that he owes him a debt, and he doesn't want to be in the way of his master's plans. The two men have not seen each other for a long time, and Caius is afraid that they'll get into a fight. He's not afraid, he says, because his life has meaning to him and he hasn't seen Caius since the battle at Bold Creek. He says that Caius has killed a lot of his comrades since then, and that they look like they've been fulfilled in death. He asks Caius not to get into the way, because he'll all be dead if they don't get rid of him. He also says that if Caius and his wife, Gracia, take over, it'll only get worse. If Caius knows what's going on, he can do something about it. He wants to do what he can to make sure that everyone dies as they wish, even if they're cursed as beasts. This is the only thing that makes Caius happy. He wishes that he could fulfill the wishes of elaine, who wanted the death of her incarnates. He thinks that if he could do that, then there might be a better way to go about it than killing everyone. He adds that he wants to teach the northern pigs to bleed like they bled him, so that they won't be able to stir up this kind of foolishness in the future
