About This Chapter
The next morning, the monster tells his father that he's glad to be running again. He's been out of the house for a while, so he can use his strength without worrying about anything. The monster says that he doesn't know how to know the "heart of god" . He wonders if his mother would approve of his running again, since he hasn't been doing much of anything lately. He asks his father to knock on the door of the church and invite some of its members to come and see him. He says that his father has grown up to be a respectable politician, and he hopes that his mother will be proud of him. The man says that the election was a "landslide" for the Republican Party, and that it's "terrifying" how far some of the candidates will go to get elected. The father asks his son if he feels sorry for his wife, who got cast off of the White House. The son says that it would be better if he didn't say anything so thoughtless in the midst of a war, when "nobody knew what might happen" , and then he asks if it was true that Mrs. White's death was not an accident, and the father says that's the conclusion of the list of the properties of somnium so far. The scientist says that they're looking for a "mere substitute for coal," and he wonders if there's any point in pursuing it further, since the costs of the research are so high. He also asks why he left his side.
