In this chapter, the voice of the girl who used to be the bar singer is heard. She tells us that she is the daughter of a Welsh soldier named John William Bancroft. When she was a child, her father told her stories about his war experiences, but when he returned from the war, he lost his voice in a gentle way. She says that if she wanted to sing, she could sing. The song she sings is about waiting for her father, who is on a ship on the way back to England. The foghorn tells her that she will not be returning to England, and she asks her name, but everyone just calls her "Nancy Schaal Bancroft" . She explains that she was once a bar singer, and that she killed her out of fear. She adds that once they find her father's body, his life will be forfeit.
