In this chapter, the voice of God grows louder and more insistent. The weak crumble, and the faithful are swallowed up. The voice grows louder still, and elaine hears it. She decides to listen to it and carry out God's will. She realizes that the army is still marching, and she wonders when they will be able to return home. She feels that the place is improving, and that the southerners are licking her boots. She knows that they must fight, and they must devise a new strategy, because they cannot continue to be a puppet of the old strategy of the Old World.
