About This Chapter
In this chapter, the incarnate tells the story of how he came to be in the town of Whitechurch. He explains that he was born in the city of Caroline, and that he and his friends had stolen 333 carolines from the town. He tells us that when he first met the priest, he thought that his life had meaning, but now that he meets him, he realizes that it has no meaning at all. The priest tells him that he must be righteous in order to be accepted in the world. The incarnate says that the priest left him "righteous ness" in his heart, but he is not there. The war has ended, and the citizens of the town fear him. He now lives in the shadows of the church. He observes countless petty crimes and wonders what salvation might be in becoming a stone statue. He asks the priest why he gave him the statue, but the priest says that he will meet again after he exacts justice.
