The chapter opens with a description of jellyfish, which change shape as they grow older. When they are young, they are called ephyra, which means "young jellyfish." When they grow old, they become jellyfish again. The narrator tells us that the jelly fish are restarting, and that they are like warring states in that they do not change shape anymore. He also tells us how he and his friends are trying to buy fabric, but they are unable to find it. He asks his friend tsukimi what her answer is, and she tells him that she has not yet managed to do anything with her proposal. He tells her that she was the princess, a brave and failed attempt at marriage. She is too young to marry, and he is too pure. He says that he does not think he is cut out to become a politician. He adds that he thinks he is smart and steel. The chapter ends with the narrator telling us that he is going to put the banesh factory on hold, since it has lost money in one week. He plans to shift all of its merchandise to Hong Kong and Shanghai.
