The chapter opens with a flashback to the day before the novel's publication. The narrator and his wife, prez., have returned from a trip to the United States. They have returned with some curry, which they have brought with them. They haggled over fabric and sewing supplies for a while, but eventually they were able to get 30 percent off fabric and sew-along supplies. They now have no idea how to choose fabric for the dresses they are planning to make. They do not know how to do so, since they do not understand the different kinds of fabrics used in clothing.
