About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's going to open a dress-making business. He's not sure what his name is, but he says it's a "cottage industry" . The narrator says he'll be making dresses out of fabric that's "best suited for them" , and he hopes to make enough money to buy a house. He also says that if the current mayor loses, the "tides" will turn after him. He says he doesn't care what the mayor fires him for, but then the mayor gives him a check for about 2000 yen, which is about 3,000 dollars. He thinks that the mayor took the wrong turn by saying the sale of Amamizukan was going to happen as planned, and that the neighborhood is still thriving. He asks the narrator if he should consider the neighborhood's shops still open, and the narrator says yes, he does. He tells the narrator that he would guess that in Amamizu, the man has finally found a "place to belong," and that he was always studying there, so he hardly played with him . He wants to take five fresh confections from the shop, but the narrator won't let him, and so he says he can't take any more. He apologizes for the intrusion, and says that the shop is a "secret," but that he hasn't been there yet. He wonders why the narrator and his friends don't visit the place, and wonders if the "anti-redevelopment movement" is going on there, too.
