About This Chapter
The narrator finds a place in the neighborhood where no boys are allowed. He asks his uncle if he plans to meet the Prime Minister. He tells him that he has dressed up like a girl. The narrator says that the prime minister is just like his father, who is a politician. He also says that his friends think that he is trying to humiliate them. He says that they only talk about music, fashion, and sex, and that the girl who talks about jellyfish is more interesting. He then asks the narrator if he can ask him a question. He wants to know if the narrator can answer only two questions: "how old are you, actually?" and "why the afro does not have one?" The narrator replies that his parents generation, the baby boomers, were the wealthiest generation in all of Japan's history, and they had no choice except to spend their youth on the "lost decade" after the bubble burst. He goes on to say that his generation has lost the hiring age, which means that it is impossible for them to earn enough money to be self-reliant. He explains that he was kicked out of his job because he did not have enough money.
