In this chapter, we are introduced to the Governess and her daughter-in-law. The Governess tells her daughter that she has a lot to do and that she doesn't have much time for the wedding. She asks her daughter if she wants to marry her son, and she says yes, but that she's going to decide for her on the wedding day. When she sees the picture of the missing girl, she asks who it is and who let her in. She also asks about the man in the picture, and he says that he's from the green company. She tells him to ask her son what he wants to do. She then asks him who he is, and when he says he wants her to marry him, she tells him that he has divorced her. She says that she didn't know who she was, and that the man she was talking about was her sister, who had already been married to her for a long time.
