After the commission ceremony, the newly promoted staff sergeant, red, tells the soldiers that he's glad they're there, because they've set an example for the rest of the company. He tells them to hurry and leave, because he has something important to say to them. He says he'll try his best to be a good soldier, since he has been promoted to the non-commissioned rank. He also says that it's a waste of his time to have been a soldier since he doesn't have much else to do. He asks if it would be a shame if the young soldiers who enlisted because of him were disappointed to see him only as a staff sergeant. Red says that he can't understand why there are more recruits because of his promotion. He's already had a hard time, he says, because of the woman who left him without a word.
