In this chapter, Desdemona and Roxane discuss the fact that they have not been able to communicate with each other since they enlisted in the army. Roxane says that she was relieved to hear that she had been accepted into the army, but Desdemonas says that he is angry because he wants to use his medical skills more effectively. He tells Roxane that he and his friends are planning to go on a tour of duty in the Volscian army, and he asks her where she is going. She tells him that she has received a letter from General Duvarll, who wants her to join the army as a volunteer medical officer. He asks her why she has to hide her existence, and she replies that she is a member of a group of justice who exercise justice "from the shadows."
