About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a thud from the enemy machine gun nest. It's clear that the enemy is using this as an opportunity to attack the group. The group has to split up and get back to the front lines. Red Dog is injured, but he's okay. He tells the group to prepare for the attack. As soon as they crossed the line, the enemy used indiscriminate bombardment. The combined forces command didn't want to slow down the advance. The number of allies declined rapidly, but the group limps. They're already sending new recruits back to their front lines, and Red Dog wonders how they'd react if they learned that the war hero is a "scummy personality" . He wonders what the reaction would be like if he found out that he was a war hero. He's worried that the story of the red dog's heroism has spread all over the world, and he wonders what people would think of him if they knew that he'd been a "dog of fortune" and that he has a bad personality. He scolds the group for ignoring the wounded soldiers. He also scolds them for not having a troop mark and for being gloomy. They ignore the wounded, he says, because they're too afraid of being seen. He says that he doesn't believe that she walked all the way back to her injury despite her injuries. He thinks that she must have been waiting for him to get the magazine he stole from her. He realizes that she's gone to the "dreamland" , and that the new surgeon is looking at the wounded. He asks the first lieutenant if he can treat
