The next morning, the newly-arrived medical officer, First Lieutenant Frederick fowler, finds his squad leader, Sergeant brown, in a tent. He is surprised to find that the sergeant is carrying a pile of boxes of supplies to the tent. The medical officer tells the sergeant that he was talking to the medical officer earlier, and that the two had discussed the current situation. The sergeant says that he is sorry for his lateness, but that he will be more careful the next time. He says that it would be better to have a relationship with someone he knows, rather than someone he doesn't know. He adds that he wishes he had stopped the "wicked woman" from approaching him. He tells her that she was once a spy and that she could erase the past from her appearance. He asks her to forget her as quickly as possible.
