The next morning, Dr. Bledsoe and the rest of the men are still on the road. They've been looking for the "devil" , but they haven't found him yet. They don't think they'll be able to find him, so they're going to have to go back in search of him. The doctor tells the men that he's found a trace of the devil's movements. He's sure it's the devil, but he doesn't know if the bishop's going to believe him or not. He tells them to get ready to go, because the mission is theirs to catch the devil. The sergeant tells them that they've got to hurry up and get the heck out of there, because they need to get to the "beast" pronto. The men rush off to get the horses to pull the stretchers for the wounded soldiers. The rider on the stretcher is the doctor, and the doctor tells him to "crunch crunch in crunch" . He says he'll need to check on his ankle to make sure he can get back on the horse. He wonders why the doctor came all the way to this place, and he wonders if he would have helped them back then if he had wanted to harm them. The road is dangerous, but the doctor says they can go there anyway.
