Now that we're back in the present, we find out that the Captain is in love with a young woman. He's laughing because he thinks that the other women are "competent and responsible officers" . The Captain says that he's made the women look like "a complete bumbling fools" , and that he thinks they're proud of their friend. He tells the Captain to stop nagging him about the wound. He says that the wound is just an act he put on so they can avoid the whole thing. He wants to know why the Captain wants to see him, but the Captain says it's too cold to close the window, so he'll just let it go. He asks the Captain why he came in the first place, and the Captain replies that he just wanted to see the Captain. He doesn't care what the Captain thinks, so long as the Captain takes care of the wound, and he wants to be out of his "animal form" for a bit. He explains that he closed the window because it was "a bit too early" for him to change his wounds. He adds that the smell was probably from his smoking, but he feels that someone else is "presence" in the room, and so he can see his hair. He thanks the Captain for his work, and says he can change his clothes at dinnertime.
