About This Chapter
The captain tells the dog that he's been staring at him too long, and asks if he has anything to complain about. He asks if the dog has a vocal cord, and the dog says that it's not from the camp, but from a bayonet. The captain says that if he were an officer, he'd know at least that much, and that's why the dog is pointing the bayonet at him. He says that he won't tell the dog anything important, and thanks him very much. The dog is all, "pin ch you damn dog" . She's a "crazy pervert" that wants to be killed, and all the officers are like that, too. They're just "low-ranking soldiers" who have to deal with the "higher ups" because of the war, the captain says. He can solve the problem himself, he says, and he'll get back at the dog as much as he wants. He's going to make sure the dog pays him back, and then he can get revenge on her as well. He kisses her, but she's obedient. He wonders how far the dog's trying to test him, and squeezes his goodness. He thinks that he ruined his night, and now he smells a "splash thud" from the night before.
