The next morning, the men discuss the progress of the battle. The captain tells his men that the enemy has been able to infiltrate the forest, and that they need to move some troops to the front lines. He tells them that Red has fallen in love with another soldier and that she's looking at him like he's a grumpy dad. The men are shocked at the captain's audacity, but the captain says that he has to protect Red because she has such a kind personality. He says that it's easier for him to exploit her than it is for her to do anything. He also says that even though a soldier has been killed trying to do the same thing, he still wants to do it. He goes on to say that even if the soldier had died trying, he would still want to do what he wants. He then says that the soldier was killed by a volk in the forest because of his greed. He blames the death on the fact that he is a busybody and doesn't have time to think about the problem at hand. He asks the captain not to touch him, but to do whatever he wants with him. He reminds the captain that he still cares for him and that he didn't decline yet. He warns the captain to be careful with his claws, because Red is using him to satisfy her lust
