The narrator introduces us to Gu yiming and his family, who have just arrived in the U.S. He introduces them to his half-brother, Gu Junru, who has come to pick them up from their flight to America. He tells them that he is his half brother's half-uncle, and that he has come because he knows that the two families are coming to America together. He also tells them about his mother, who was about to say that he had a half-American brother, but changed her mind when she realized that she was talking about her son. The narrator asks if there is a place for his family to stay in the new house, which is very expensive in America. His mother, he tells them, is just trying to go abroad and have fun. He says that he will come to the house often, but he will not listen to the nonsense of his mother.
