The scene opens with Mr. Manette's entrance. He's surprised to see the young man, who has come to pick up one of the prostitutes each day. He asks if he can have his "own harem" , which is a fancy way of saying that he'd like to have his own wife and children. He tells Manette to be more subtle with him, because he's got "gu yiming" in his heart, but he doesn't have a girlfriend or wife. He says that if Manette is serious about his proposal, he should think seriously about what he just said. He warns Manette not to get into a fight with the other prostitutes because they're all "poins" . He also says that he can't stop Manette from touching Manette on the head if he wants to, because if he does, he'll "take your f*cking calm down" a bit. He then goes on to insult Manette for being such a jerk. He accuses Manette of being too high up in the social ladder to be able to do such a thing, and he says that when he was teasing Manette, he never asked for permission to touch him. He adds that if he wanted to, he could "touch a single hair" on the man's head, and that's what he would do if he dared to do so. He continues to mock Manette about his behavior, and Manette tells him that he has to be strong in order to become a wife for Manette.
