In this chapter, the protagonist is introduced to a new character, a former student of the protagonist's father's. The protagonist explains that the former student, who is now a police officer, has been training him in the use of a deadly weapon. The former student was a graduate of a science department at an East Coast university, and the protagonist was attracted to him, but he was aloof and good-looking. He tells the protagonist that if he scores 95 or higher in the next exam, he'll be able to get a job as a security guard.
