In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who have been introduced in previous chapters. The first person introduced in this chapter is Krook, who is now disguised as a servant. He tells us that he has come to meet Krook because he is grateful to have known him. Krook asks if it is true that the new regime will not kill civilians for no reason, and Krook assures him that it is. He then tells us about the Merigina family, who were killed by bloodhunters in the battle two years ago. He says that even though the family has fallen, there is still a lot of work to be done. He explains that the Merigonis want to destroy the whole family to prevent a peace negotiation between vampires and humans. He believes that there is a deception going on between the vampires and the humans, and that this is why they are trying to rule the entire blood race.
