The next morning, Ming learns that the chancellor has been taken to an infirmary because of a snakebite. Ming tells the schoolmaster that he has come back from the woods because someone has been wounded in the fight. Ming asks if they have any other orders, and Ming replies that they have been back for the past two days. Ming says that he is sorry that he offended Zhean too much, and that he blames himself for the accident. Ming then tells the story of how the chancellor saved him from the snakebite, and how he is now dying. Ming thanks Ming for coming to visit him, and tells him that Miss Jessel will visit him tonight
