Three months have passed since the fire at the Merigina house, and the bodies of her brother and father have been found. They are under house arrest, awaiting trial. The bodies were burned to cinders, and it is believed that they committed suicide. The bridge group rummages through the house and finds the bodies, but they are not her father and her brother. They believe that they chose not to implicate her in the fire, and that she is still alive. She asks him to come and visit her, but he refuses, saying that he is worried about her. He goes back to check on her, and finds that she has died. She tells him that her family was very rich, but that she was basically good to him. He tells her that he does not have enough money to pay for a doctor for her, so she should come and eat with him first. He asks her if she is trying to take revenge on him by making her depend on him, and she replies that she does not believe him. She says that we are all individuals and that it is painful that their loved ones left them too early. She adds that she never expected that she would find warmth from a servant whom she did not care about, but when she left her, she found out that she had been by her side.
