About This Chapter
It's the morning after the picnic, and Hirokazu is still moping around. He's still mopey and mopey mopey, but he's not mopey at all. He wants to go outside and play with his brother, who's been playing with the other kids. He doesn't know what to make of the fact that his brother is playing with other kids, so he just leaves it to them to do whatever they want with it. He tells his brother that he submitted his letter of re-entry to the U.S., and that's all he needs to know about the whole thing. He says that if he decides to quit, he'll be free to do so. He also says that he'd rather be the one who quits than the other way around, because that would mean that he would be out of line with the rest of the people in the world. He asks his brother if he has any sympathy for anyone who is "out of line" , and he says he does. He then asks him if he thinks that he is turning his life around, and she says that she does, but that he has more to protect his own ideals than his own judgment of her. She also asks him why he is still growing up, when he could just as easily have gotten five centimeters taller . She asks him what secret strategy he has to make himself taller. He answers that he wants to share his secret with his sister, who is always visiting.
