About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Governess and her son-in-law discuss the events of the previous day. The Governess has just received a call from her son, who tells her that his mother's business partner ran up a lot of debt, and that he'd like to go back to school. He doesn't want his mother to have to go through the "prostitution" process, and he's not interested in going to school if that means forcing his mother into "prostitu" . He'd rather stay home and raise his own family. He tells his mother not to worry, though, because he'll take care of her. He also tells her about his job interview, in which he was "embarrassed" by the whole situation. He says that he didn't know what he was talking about, but that he was at an interview anyway, so he can't think of anything else to say. He adds that the police shouldn't rush into the case, since the girl who ran the brothel wasn't the girl's partner, but rather a friend of hers. He asks his mother if she'd mind staying out of their "busi ness" , and she says that she would, since it would be better if she were "a jerk" from the beginning. She also tells him that she's going to go fishing with her friends the next day.
