The chapter opens with a flashback to the murder of Viola's father. The narrator tells us that the man who killed her father, Damis, was the same man who tried to stab Viola when she was a child. The flashback also shows that Damis's hair is now black, and that he has changed from a violent criminal to a man who is trying to start a new life.
