In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he's beaten the captain of his school's karuta team by 21 cards. He's super impressed, but he asks the girl about how she's going to spend her last summer before high school. The girl says she doesn't know what to do with herself now that she has so much power, but she'll figure out a way to use it when she gets stronger. The narrator says that it's good that he learned to play a compact style of karuta because it means he'll have less time to waste. He also says that the tournament is a good opportunity to get some fresh air, since all of the senior high schools in the country are playing this tournament. The girls are psyched to be going to the tournament together, since they've all been waiting for the captain to come back from the tournament. They're also psyched that the captain just won the tournament, since it means they're going to be able to play together again.
