The chapter opens with a conversation between the narrator and his wife. The narrator tells his wife that he has been studying hard for his exams. He tells her that he loves her, but that he does not want to use her name as a "fuel" to get him to the top of his class. He asks her to join the Karuta Club so that he can improve his grades. He also asks her if she would like to hang out with him. She says that she would, but he says that he should not use the word "girlfriends" as a fuel for his progress. He then asks his wife if she thinks that the two of them have a good marriage. She replies that she does not think so, but she does want to know what his feelings are in his heart. He replies that he wants to know how he can get over his feelings for her.
