Back at school, the girls are practicing for their entrance exams. One of the girls asks the other if they need to have more mats to practice on. The other says they don't, since they're too busy studying for the exams. The girls agree that they need more mats, but the other says that they can't practice on more mats because they've been studying for exams all winter. The girl says that she's been studying so hard for the entrance exams that she doesn't have time to practice. The boy chimes in that he's better than the girl, and the girl agrees that she is better than him, too. The boys tease each other about how much better they are than the other, and then the girl asks the boy if he likes the poems in the book of poems that the teacher has selected for the exam. The teacher says that the poems are arranged in chronological order, and that's how they are displayed in the palace. The two boys tease the girl about not wearing a hakama, and she says that it's a pain to wear one because it looks like a hat. They also tease the other about not being able to play cards because they haven't had the chance to practice cards yet.
