The chapter opens with the students hurrying up and getting to sleep. They're playing a game, and one of the girls is talking to the other students about how she's more thoughtful than everyone else is. The boys are in another room, and the girls are in the other room. The girls are talking about how they're going to go to a convenience store to buy some food. They don't have time to think about what's going on at school, so they go off to play the game. They come back and find that the boys are already in the boys' room. They tell the girls to get to bed and wait for sensei to come back from his trip to the west coast of Japan. He'll be back in a few minutes. The other girls are bummed that they didn't get to go on the trip after winning the game, but they'll have to wait until the next day to see if he's back. The teacher sends a message to the boys saying that the other girls have won the match, and that the challenger has been decided. The girl is bummed that she didn' t get a chance to come to the school after winning, but the teacher tells her that she'll get another chance when the east-west match is over. He tells the girls that he'll announce their plan to get him out of the ranks. He wants them to be more active in their studies, so that he can become a master. He also tells them that the teacher is coming out to say how he feels, and he wants them all to come and practice with him. He doesn't want them to practice against him, because that would ruin their own style. He says that if he tried to imitate the teacher, it would be like practicing
