About This Chapter
In this short scene, the three students discuss the upcoming Karuta tournament at the school. Arata and Taichi are in the process of joining the school's elite club, while Chihayafuru and his friend, the captain, are preparing for their first match against each other. As they prepare for the match, Arata tells Chihaya to stop acting like he's so important. He tells her that he can see how lonely she'd be if she were to walk to school alone. He also tells her about how Chihaya's grandfather taught him how to play the game of Karuta, and how he became the best player in the world because of his grandfather's mentorship. He thanks Chihaya for his kind words, and says that he'll be going to the school to visit him. He's wearing glasses, which Chihaya thinks is a sign of his loneliness. Chihaya tells him that he shouldn't worry about her so much, since she's not wearing glasses. The captain asks Arata to submit the order of the players, and Arata agrees to do so. He says that Chihaya has never won a Karuta trophy before, and that he hopes the two of them can win it together. He then tells the captain that he is sorry that he beat him today, but that he should have joined a better club, since Chihaya is a punk. He goes on to say that after beating him, he will go buy a "pork bun" , and after that he will be done beating Chihaya. He asks the captain if he thinks he can beat him until two months, and the captain replies that he has fifteen minutes of "memori zing time," or time to recover from a defeat.
